Introduction

The Africa Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Cooling and Cold Chain (ACES) invites applications for the One-Day General Health and Safety Course. 

This introductory training is designed to provide participants with a foundational understanding of occupational health and safety (OHS) principles, with particular relevance to environments involving refrigeration, cooling, and cold chain systems.

Course Description

Participants will be introduced to essential safety concepts including hazard identification, risk assessment, personal protective equipment (PPE), electrical safety, emergency procedures, and the safe handling of tools and equipment. Emphasis will be placed on practical, real-world applications to ensure participants can confidently implement safety practices across both formal and informal work settings.

The course includes real-life case studies, interactive discussions, and hands-on demonstrations. It also highlights a range of career pathways in occupational health and safety, encouraging participants to explore roles such as safety technicians, field supervisors, business owners, or safety advocates. Whether you're already working in the sector or planning to launch your own venture, this course will equip you with the essential knowledge and confidence to operate safely and responsibly in refrigeration-related environments.

Syllabus Outline

The One-Day General Health and Safety Course will cover the following core topics:

  • Introduction to health and safety: legislation, duties, and responsibilities
  • Risk assessment principles and procedures
  • Fire safety awareness and response
  • Basic electrical safety
  • Safe manual handling techniques
  • First aid essentials
  • Incident and accident reporting
  • Working with hazardous substances and refrigerants
  • Use and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Personal safety and situational awareness

  • A Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Short responses (maximum 150 words each) to the following questions:
    1. Do you have any background in refrigeration or a refrigeration-related field? If yes, please describe.
    2. What are your expectations upon completing this course?
    3. Do you have any dietary requirements or mobility restrictions that you want us to be aware of? (This will be treated confidentially to support your attendance.)
