Introduction

The Africa Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Cooling and Cold Chain (ACES) invites applications for the GESI in Cooling and Cold-Chain Foundation Training. This one-day course combines some theoretical knowledge on fundamental GESI concepts and practical exercises.

Cold-chain stakeholders need to be GESI aware, ensuring all marginalised members have equal access to cold-chain opportunities such as training, resources, participation in decision-making and in the labour force, technology, and services

Course Description

This foundation course introduces the importance of GESI in the cooling and cold-chain sector, focusing on why it matters and the opportunities it unlocks. It will be delivered through lectures, with some group exercises to enhance the understanding of key GESI concepts. 

It is a mandatory prerequisite for the 4-day course - GESI Integration in Cooling and Cold-chain Sectors, Projects and Businesses.

This course is ideal for individuals working in the cold-chain sector or relevant cross-cutting sectors like agriculture, health.

  • Entrepreneurs who are leading or managing refrigeration-based businesses in agriculture and health
  • Individuals working on cold-chain related development projects/programmes

Syllabus Outline

The GESI in cooling and cold-chain foundation training course will cover the following key topics:

Importance of integrating GESI in the cold-chain sectors

  • The importance of integrating GESI by demonstrating the added value it brings.
  • An overview of existing GESI disparities in the cooling and cold-chain sector (e.g., differences in needs, access, and participation).
  • How addressing gaps in these three GESI dimensions (needs, access, and participation) can unlock new opportunities and improve sector-wide and societal outcomes?

Introduction of GESI fundamental concepts -difference in sex/gender, gender roles, intersectionality

  • The fundamental concepts of sex and gender; gender roles; intersectionality.
  • Individual/group exercises to explain these concepts, encourage critical thinking, and develop GESI-sensitive problem-solving skills.

Introduction of GESI conceptual framework- needs, access and participation

  • The three key domains of the GESI framework: needs, access, and participation, and their ten sub-domains that provide a structured approach to GESI analysis.
  • How do holistic examination of these domains breaks down GESI issues into measurable components that support targeted interventions?
  • The importance of this framework in ensuring equal opportunities for all, regardless of intersectional identities (e.g. gender, age, education, income level).
  • Why is this framework central to the ACES programme and how it ensures inclusive outcomes and fairness across all groups in cold-chain sector?

Safeguarding and SHEA (Sexual Harassment, Exploitation, and Abuse) policies

  • The importance of Safeguarding and SHEA (Sexual Harassment, Exploitation, and Abuse) policies in protecting vulnerable individuals, regardless of their gender, and ensuring fair and secure environments.
  • The role of these policies in creating GESI-sensitive workplaces, institutions, and programmes.
  • The key components of Safeguarding and SHEA policies, including clear codes of conduct as guidelines for acceptable and unacceptable behaviour, training and awareness for project implementers as well as beneficiaries, robust reporting and response mechanisms, enforcement of disciplinary actions, and accountability.
